Reparations Fund Distribution

We are pleased to announce that the first disbursement from the Share the Gifts-Honour the Treaties Reparations fund has been gifted to two Indigenous-Led organizations in Treaty 1 territory. On April 22, 2026, a small group of Indigenous Knowledge Keepers with whom we have held relationships for some time were invited to meet alongside the Keepers of the Circle to discern whether distributing these funds at this time was wise, and if so, to which Indigenous organizations or groups specifically the funds should be given. It has always been our commitment that the distribution of the Reparations Fund will be determined by Indigenous peoples.  Following a shared meal, the Keepers of the Circle stepped out of the room to ensure the Indigenous guests could offer and discuss their thoughts freely. 

From the discussion, the Knowledge Keepers recommendation was to distribute a gift of $4000 to two organizations they identified in recognition of the very important work they both do, and in support of their ongoing efforts.

• Community Helpers Unite (CHU), Inc. an Indigenous led non-profit and social enterprise in North Winnipeg that seeks to “increase food security in the community and build independence with affordable and free meals, food education, mentorship, as well as meaningful employment  and volunteer opportunities.”  Started in 2021, they partner with local farmers, grocers, business, and civil society to upcycle rescued food into nutritious affordable and free meals to address food security sustainably.

• Zoongizi Ode, Inc., (“strong hearts” in Anishinabemowin), an Indigenous-led not-for-profit organization, was launched in 2014 as a grassroots group called Fearless R2W in Winnipeg’s North End.  Zoongizi Ode is “dedicated to empowering youth and families in Manitoba impacted by complex systems, through advocacy, education, and support. Rooted in the values of love, cultural safety, and Indigenous sovereignty, [they] create lasting change by challenging systems, fostering self-determination, and empowering communities.”  Started by community leaders Michael Champagne and Mary Burton, the group holds weekly meetings in the community to support and discuss the challenges facing kids in care, Indigenous parents working to reunify with their children, and youth transitioning out of care at age 18.

The Knowledge Keepers shared that they felt it was good to start locally here in Winnipeg. While initiatives in First Nation reserves are important, they can come later as we expand.  Regarding the decision to move forward now with distributing most of the money in the fund, it was noted that even modest amounts can make a difference to Indigenous-led Organizations.

We are grateful to these Knowledge Keepers, as well as all those who chose to redistribute resources by contributing to the STG-HTT Reparations Fund!  We look forward to future opportunities for reparation going forward as we continue the daily work of dismantling colonialism and creating a more just and equitable future.
